Ace Indian batter Virat Kohli has slipped out of the top 20 ICC test match rankings for the first time. Kohli, who turned 36 yesterday has had a rough year with the bat, especially in the red-ball format.
In the recently concluded test series against New Zealand Kohli just scored 93 runs in 6 innings at an average of 15. It has been more than a year since Virat Kohli scored a test ton in the longest format of the game.
In the recent series against New Zealand Kohli also recorded his worst-ever performance in a bilateral test series since that horror show in the 2014 tour of England where Kohli had scored 134 runs in 10 innings.
Kohli had his best years in the test format from 2016-2018 where he churned out runs for fun both home & away. Kohli maintained his good form which eventually led to him being at the top of the ICC test rankings. He also achieved the feat of being the only batter to be the top-ranked player in all three formats.
The former Indian captain went past the 9000-test runs mark but, on a poor outing against New Zealand his test average went below 48.00, currently (47.83). Kohli's average skyrocketed in tests from the 2016-2019 era (55.10).
The last time his test average was under 48 was in the early part of 2016. Kohli fell eight spots to 22 in the rankings while India's captain Rohit Sharma slipped to 26 in the rankings.
Yashasvi Jaiswal is currently in the 3rd position in the red-ball format, just behind experienced batters Joe Root & Kane Williamson. While Rishabh Pant currently occupies the 6th spot. Shubman Gill (16th rank) is placed just outside the top 15.
India's biggest match-winners Jasprit Bumrah (3rd Rank), R Ashwin (5th rank) & Ravindra Jadeja (8th Rank) hold onto their places, to ensure they are still there in the top 10.
