PKL's one of the top franchises, U Mumba, has released its star defender Sombir Goswami from the remainder of the season effective immediately. The franchise hasn't disclosed the reason behind the decision. The Mumbai-based outfit issued a brief statement on its social media handles announcing the release. The reason behind the release is suspense, given that the player hasn't had any injury or health concerns. There are murmurs that the release has been made owing to some disciplinary actions. However, nothing can be confirmed as yet as both the franchisee & the player have not disclosed any details regarding the same.
After 106 matches in the ongoing PKL season, the U Mumba are placed in the second spot with 10 wins in 18 games. Sombir has performed extremely well for U-Mumba as he is in the top 15 list with the most tackle points in PKL 2024 with 43 tackle points in 17 games, the most for a U-Mumba player this season.
Sombir has also completed 4 High5s this season, a record that is matched by Yogesh Dahiya of Dabang Delhi & Hitesh Kumar of UP Yoddhas. Only Nitish Kumar of Tamil Thalaivas & Nitin Rawal of Bengaluru Bulls have five high5s a piece in this season of PKL. A High5 in Kabaddi means when a defender or a player picks five or more tackle points.
Sombir's release is a hotly debated question as the U-Mumba coach Gholamreza Mazardani heaped huge praises for the defender after his 7-point performance against the Jaipur Pink Panthers resulting in a thrilling tie.
"Sombir is one of the best talents in the current season of PKL, he has slowly started to show his true potential as a player, I hope he performs well & wins more matches for us". Stated the U-Mumba coach in the Press Conference
