From Medal Hopes to Missed Dreams: Indian Athletes Who Fell Short of Paris Qualification

Neha . July 7, 2024

Even though India has a strong delegation of athletes competing in the Olympics in Paris, certain well-known figures are missing from the competition.

Here are a few Indian athletes who were unsuccessful in earning spots for the 2024 Games:

List of Indian Players Who Missed Paris Olympics:

Wrestling:

The absence of two Olympic medalists Ravi Dahiya (silver, Tokyo 2020) and Nitu Ghangas (gold, Common Wealth Games 2022) disappointed wrestling enthusiasts. While Ghangas lost her qualifying match due to her inability to adjust to a new weight class, Dahiya narrowly lost at the national trials.

Badminton:

Known for his aggressive technique, Kidambi Srikanth was unable to survive the harsh global rankings. His aspirations of competing in Paris were dashed by an early elimination at the All-England Open Championships.

Athletics:

For a few talented track and field competitors, injuries dealt a harsh hand. Eldhose Paul, the triple jumper, and long jump silver medallist Murali Sreeshankar were forced to retire owing to injury.

Other Sports:

During the Asian qualifiers, boxer Nitu Ghangas was eliminated after losing her qualifying match, and fencer Bhavani Devi was unable to meet her quota.

These are but a few instances and each spot that is lost demonstrates the commitment and sacrifice made by an athlete. Their experiences and hardships serve as a reminder of the enormous obstacles sportsmen endure in their quest for Olympic success, even if they will not be participating in Paris.
