One of India's finest opening batters, often touted as the 'Hitman' in world cricket, turned 38 today. From the Maidans of Mumbai to becoming one of the biggest brands & sports icons in world cricket. Rohit Sharma has been a revelation in transforming the face of Indian batting in the last decade or so.
Known for his lazy elegance & oozing class, the 'Hitman' is one of the best bets in the business & to bet your money on when the chips are down. Rohit is known for his aggressive approach & a sharp cricketing brain has provided numerous performances for both India & his IPL franchise Mumbai Indians ever since he set foot in world cricket.
The journey started for Rohit in Nagpur on 30th April 1987 to Gurunath & Purnima Sharma. From a very young age, Rohit developed an interest in playing cricket. Rohit made his List A debut for West Zone in the Deodhar Trophy. Rohit made his India debut in 2007, playing against Ireland at Belfast.
He then went on to represent in the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007, his underated knock of an unbeaten 30 in the finals proved a key figure in helping India win the title, beating arch-rivals Pakistan in the finals.
On that note, let's have a look at some of the records created by 'Hitman' Rohit Sharma in his 18-year glorious International Career.
Rohit Sharma's 264 against Sri Lanka in 2014 in Eden Gardens, Kolkata, is still the highest ever score recorded in the history of ODI Cricket. Rohit went berserk after his catch was dropped by Thisara Perera at third man.
Rohit found his sublime touch & unleashed 33 boundaries while sending the white SG ball 9 times over the ropes to record the highest score of 264 off 173 balls.
Rohit Sharma holds the record for smashing the most hundreds (5) in a single edition of the ODI World Cup in 2019 in England & Wales. This is the most smashed by a player in the ODI World Cups. Rohit scored 648 runs in 9 innings, surpassing Kumar Sangakkara's record of centuries (4) in the 2015 World Cup edition in Australia & New Zealand.
Rohit's five hundreds came against South Africa (122), Pakistan (140), Sri Lanka (103), Bangladesh (104) & England (102).
Even though Rohit has the highest ODI score of 264, the star batter from Mumbai has achieved this feat thrice in ODI Cricket. 209 vs Australia, Bengaluru, 2013, 264 vs Sri Lanka, 2014, Kolkata & 208* vs Sri Lanka in 2017, Mohali. Hence, Rohit Sharma is the only batter to record 3 Double tons in ODI Cricket.
A young Rohit Sharma scored his first ton in the IPL against the Kolkata Knight Riders at his favorite venue in the Eden Gardens. In the presence of stalwarts Sachin Tendulkar & Ricky Ponting, this young boy from Nagpur smashed a breathtaking 109 off 60 that helped the Mumbai Indians to win that match by 27 runs.
Rohit finally broke his 12-year wait of smashing an IPL ton against Arch-Rivals Chennai Super Kings last year, smashing a brilliant unbeaten 105*, albeit in a losing cause at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Rohit laced 11 boundaries and 5 sixes in that match.
In the fourteenth match of IPL 2018, Rohit Sharma blasted a blazing 94 after Umesh Yadav got Suryakumar Yadav & Ishan Kishan early. Rohit on Turbo mode made a magnificent 94 off 52 balls to help MI beat Virat Kohli-led RCB.
Happy birthday, Skipper! Cheers to many more International & IPL wins & cheers to more breathtaking knocks.
