Chawla made his first-class debut as a 16-year-old in October 2005 and made rapid progress up through the ranks. By March of the following year, he'd won a Test cap when picked to play in Mohali against England, becoming the second-youngest man after Sachin Tendulkar to don the India whites
The leggie was more successful in the Indian Premier League (IPL) playing for four teams, Punjab Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders, Chennai Super Kings & Mumbai Indians in his 192 matches in the IPL picking up 179 wickets respectively.
Piyush is fondly remembered for his heroics in the 2014 IPL final, against Punjab Kings, where he smashed Mitchell Johnson & Parvinder Awana to seal the second IPL title for KKR. Chawla last featured in the IPL in 2024 for the Mumbai Indians.
