The 18th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) will take center stage from Saturday (22nd March). Over the years the IPL has provided a platform for players to showcase their talent.
With the mega auctions for 2025 concluded, some veterans have still made a big impact in the league & fetched a great sum in the auctions. Some experienced yet oldest players will be key to their respective franchises in IPL 2025. On that note, let's have a look at the oldest players to feature in IPL 2025.
Former captain of the Chennai Super Kings MS Dhoni is going to be the oldest player who is set to feature in IPL 2025 at the age of 43 years & 147 days. Dhoni has been a revelation to the IPL, he has been one of the biggest player icons in the IPL.
Having retired from the International circuit 5 years ago Dhoni turns out for the IPL as a mark of respect for his fans. Having led the side to 5 IPL titles in his long IPL career the veteran would be looking forward to win the title as a player under the leadership of Ruturaj Gaikwad.
Former South African batter Faf Du Plessis, who was also a former captain for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the last cycle is the 2nd oldest player to feature in the IPL. Du Plessis has represented the Chennai Super Kings, Rising Pune Super Giants, and Royal Challengers Bengaluru, in the mega auctions he was snapped up by the Delhi Capitals for a base price of INR 2 Crores. Du Plessis has won the IPL twice with CSK in 2018 & 2021.
Former Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has been one of the best spinners in the tournament's history. Ashwin was snapped up by his home franchise Chennai Super Kings after a decade at a whopping prize of INR 9.75 Crores. Ashwin at 38 years & 75 days will be the third-oldest player set to feature in the IPL. Ashwin has represented four other franchises in the IPL namely- Rajasthan Royals, Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals & now-defunct Rising Pune Supergiants.
Former captain of the Mumbai Indians Rohit Sharma was retained by the Franchise for INR 16.5 Crores ahead of the Mega Auction. Rohit Sharma has been a seasoned campaigner for the Mumbai Indians in the last decade both as a player & a captain.
Rohit Sharma at 37 Years & 215 days is the 4th oldest player set to feature in IPL 2025. He took over the reins from Ricky Ponting in the middle of the 2013 season & later went onto win the title that year. Rohit added four more IPL silverware in his kitty (2015,2017,2019 & 2020).
Former England all-rounder Moeen Ali has been plying his trade in the IPL for quite some time now. At the age of 37 years & 166 days, Moeen Ali is the fifth oldest player in this list to feature in the IPL. In his IPL history, Moeen Ali has represented Royal Challengers Bengaluru & Chennai Super Kings.
Karn Sharma has been a veteran in the league after debuting in 2014 for the Sunrisers Hyderabad. Karn Sharma at 37 Years & 39 days is the 6th oldest player in the list to feature in IPL 2025. Sharma was picked by the Mumbai Indians in the mega auctions for INR 50 Lakh. In his IPL journey so far Karn Sharma has played 84 matches for different IPL teams Sunrisers Hyderabad(SRH), Royal Challengers Bengaluru(RCB) & Chennai Super Kings(CSK).
'Dre Russ' as he is often called by the cricketing pundits & by his beloved Kolkata crowd in the IPL. Andre Russell at 36 Years & 216 days is the 7th oldest player to feature in the IPL 2025. Russell made his debut for KKR in IPL 2014 after he was released by Delhi Capitals (Then Delhi Daredevils) ahead of the Auctions.
Russell has played 126 matches in the IPL picking 115 wickets & scoring nearly 2500 hundred runs.
Another star player from the Caribbean Islands & one of the veteran players from the Kolkata knight Riders Sunil Narine at 36 years & 189 days is the 8th oldest player to feature in the IPL.
Narine has had a long-lasting impact on the Kolkata-based outfit, he has played a key role in KKR's 3 IPL title victories in (2012,2014 & 2024). Narine, once again will play a crucial role in KKR's title defense in IPL 2025.
Ajinkya Rahane, a veteran batter in the history of the IPL is the 9th oldest player at the age of 36 years & 178 days to feature in the IPL. Rahane made his IPL debut in the inaugural season in 2008. Since then he has participated in 185 IPL games for different outfits(MI, RR, RPS, DC, CSK & KKR).
This will be Rahane's second stint at the Kolkata Knight Riders after previously representing the franchise in 2022. Rahane was picked by the Knights in the accelerated round in the mega auctions for a base price of INR Crores. Rahane is now all set to lead the KKR in IPL 2025.
Virat Kohli, a modern-day legend is the last man on this list of oldest players in IPL 2025. Virat Kohli made his IPL debut in 2008 in the very first match of the IPL against Kolkata Knight Riders. Since then, he's never looked back, as of today Kohli stands as the highest run-scorer in the IPL with more than 8000 runs, and he has won the orange cap twice (2016 & 2024).
Kohli, who retired from the T20I format as a T20 World Cup winner will now be looking to add his maiden IPL title that has eluded him since the inaugural season.
The 18th edition of the IPL is all set to begin in a few days, the season is expected to be a blockbuster as there have been personnel changes, and a tournament will 10 teams will be fighting neck-to-neck to claim the ultimate glory. This could perhaps be a swansong for one of India's best captains MS Dhoni after playing in the IPL for 17 years, he too will be looking for a perfect final hurrah in IPL 2025.
