Nicholas Pooran has been named captain for MI New York for the upcoming season of Major League Cricket (MLC) 2025. The 29-year-old recently announced his retirement from international cricket. Pooran takes over from fellow countryman Kieron Pollard, who led the side for the opening two seasons.
Pooran's best season came in the inaugural season of the league, where he smashed 388 runs at a strike rate of 167. His mammoth knock of 137 in the finals helped MI New York beat the Seattle Orcas & win the inaugural title.
The left-handed wicket-keeper batter is in prime form at the moment as he smashed the highest number of sixes (170) in the T20I format last year. Pooran had a great IPL season as he breached the 500-run mark for the first time in the IPL. He also smashed the highest amount of sixes hit by a batter in a single IPL edition (40).

Pooran comes in with prior leadership experience at the international level, having captained West Indies in white-ball formats, but his stint as full-time skipper in 2022 ended with just 8 wins in 30 matches after West Indies crashed out of the qualifying stage of the 2022 T20 World Cup.
The 2025 edition of MLC begins on June 12 with San Francisco Unicorns taking on Washington Freedom. MI New York opens their campaign on June 13 against the Texas Super Kings.
