The 18th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has reached its mid-point as the teams now look forward to consolidating their places in the top 4. The IPL, known for huge sixes & lip-smacking boundaries, just isn't about hitting the ball in the air or lacing it through the carpet to the boundary. The teams have also played plenty of dot balls this year, with the 5-time Champions Chennai Super Kings topping the list. Let's have a look at the complete list of the most dot balls played by teams in IPL 2025.
Five-time champions Chennai Super Kings feature first in the list in terms of teams who have played the most dot balls in the IPL. The Chennai-based franchise is struggling in the tournament with just 2 wins in 9 matches & are all but out of the race for a place in the playoffs. The CSK batting has been the talk of the town for their timid batting approach, especially in the powerplay, where they have played most of their dot balls.
Defending Champions Kolkata Knight Riders have been on a downhill spiral after their title win last year. The Knight Riders have struggled in the middle phase to score fluently, especially due to Venkatesh Iyer's loss of form. his uncharacteristic 14 off 19 against the Gujarat Titans proved to be the killer blow for KKR. Apart from Iyer, Sunil Narine hasn't been able to repeat his heroics with the bat from last year, Quinton De Kock has blown hot & cold he was eventually dropped from KKR's last game against GT. Their seasoned campaigners, Rinku Singh & Andre Russell, have also been struggling for form. KKR are currently in the 7th spot 3 wins in 8 matches.
The Royals from Rajasthan are in all sorts of trouble both on & off the field after having lost 5 matches on the bounce, 4 in the last over of the match. The Jaipur-based franchise has been explosive in the powerplay however, the run scoring gets slow once the openers depart. RR batters have been found wanting in the death overs, playing plenty of dot balls while trying to take the game deep.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru have played the fourth most number of dot balls this season despite having the star-studded opening duo of Virat Kohli & Phil Salt, followed by spin basher & Skipper Rajat Patidar, and finisher in Tim David. The Royal Challengers, once the openers are dismissed, have struggled to forge partnerships & the lack of runs from their middle & lower order is the reason why they claim the fourth spot in the most dot balls played in IPL 2025.
5-time champs MI come in the fifth spot with 198 dot balls. The Reliance group-owned Mumbai Indians, often known as the slow starters in the IPL, once again had a rough start, winning just 1 game in their first 5 matches, thus also playing the majority of their dot balls.
Sunrisers Hyderabad has had a poor campaign this year, languishing in the lower half of the table, mainly due to the inconsistent form of their opening duo of Travis Head & Abhishek Sharma. Once the openers get dismissed, the SRH batting lineup has struggled to score runs in the last few outings against MI, GT & DC. The opening combo were castled cheaply, thus leading to an increase in the dot ball percentage.
The 'Nawabs Of Lucknow' are 7th on the list, largely due to their dynamic top 3 comprising Aiden Markram, Mitchell Marsh & Nicholas Pooran. Despite Pant's horrendous form, the Super Giants have managed to keep up with the fast pace of the game in all three innings of batting.
Gujarat Titans are ranked 8th in the list with 167 dot balls. The Ahmedabad-based franchise comprising Shubman Gill, Sai Sudharshan, and Jos Buttler has done the bulk of the scoring for the Titans, with a cameo here & there from Rahul Tewatia. The rest of the batting lineup hasn't been tested. The unreal consistency from Gujarat's top 3 & scoring runs at a fair clip has resulted in them playing less number of dot balls.
The Kings from Punjab have played the second fewest dot balls in the IPL so far, with just 145 dots, largely due to their uncapped opening pair of Prabhsimran Singh & Priyansh Arya. Nehal Wadehera & Shreyas Iyer's presence in the middle order has also been the reason for Punjab Kings' batting going in turbo mode for the full 20 overs.
The Delhi Capitals have played the least amount of dot balls in IPL 2025 so far, just a shade above 20 overs. Thus reflecting how aggressive they have been as a batting unit in their allotted 20 overs.
