When it comes to leading a side in the red-ball format, it is perhaps the toughest yet the proudest job a player can have to lead his or her country in test cricket at the International level.
Especially when an Indian captain is asked to lead the test side at the International level it becomes more rewarding & equally challenging at times while leading the side towards the glory.
The Most Successful Test Captain in the history of Indian Test Cricket is none other than the great Virat Kohli, who led the Indian side in 68 matches, winning 40 of them, while 11 games ended up in stalemate & 17 losses. Kohli's winning percentage of 58.42 % is the highest win percentage to date for an Indian captain.
Kohli took over the reins from MS Dhoni in 2014; at that time, India was ranked at the 7th spot in the ICC Test Rankings. Under Kohli's captaincy, India won its first-ever test series in Australia. When Kohli left the Test captaincy team India was ranked in 1st place.
'Captain Cool' MS Dhoni comes second on the list with 27 wins in 60 games, losing 18 matches, while 15 ended up in draws. In Dhoni's era, Team India had middling returns as a captain in the test format. Dhoni bowed out of the test format with a 45% win percentage.
The 'Prince of Kolkata' aka Sourav Ganguly comes third on the list with 21 wins, 13 losses & 15 drawn games, making a win percentage of 42.85%. Under the Ganguly era, India learned the art of winning test matches overseas, in the SENA countries, with one of them being a famous innings win in England Headingley in 2002.
Mohammed Azharuddin was tactically a sharp skipper with brilliant tactics on display as a leader, yet he couldn't achieve a great taste of success as a leader in the test format. Azhar won 14 & lost 14 games, while 19 games ended in draws, thus making a percentage of 29.78%.
The 'Little Master' Sunil Gavaskar led India in 47 test matches where ending up with 9 wins, 8 defeats & a staggering 30 drawn matches, the most amount of matches drawn under a captain. These records make a combined percentage of 19.14%.
