The Indian Chess contingent has had a great year, after a memorable win for D Gukesh after he was crowned as the youngest World Chess champion. It was then Koneru Humpy's turn to bring more laurels for her country. Koneru Humpy went on to win the FIDE World Rapid Chess Championships beating Indonesia's Irene Sukandar in the finals. With this win, she went on to make history.
Koneru Humpy had earlier won the FIDE Rapid Chess Championships in 2019. In 2024 she won the title again and became the first Indian to win the world title twice. This was also the 4th time that Humpy has finished in the top three of the event.
Koneru Humpy is only the second women's player in history to win multiple World Rapid championships after China's Ju Wenjun.
In a chat with FIDE Koneru stated that she was surprised after her win as she had lost her first round and did not expect to win the title.
"It was high time for India after Gukesh got the World Championship title, it was my turn to win the title for India. I'm very happy to have won the title twice. To be honest, I wasn't expecting this win as I had lost in the first round game, I had never imagined that I would be standing at the podium as a champion"
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Koneru Humpy on the micro-blogging site X (formerly known as Twitter) for her memorable win in the championships.
