India has participated in the Paralympics since 1968 but won their first Paralympics medal in 1972. Since 1984 India has been sending its athletes consistently to the Paralympics. India has won 31 medals at the Paralympics ( 9 gold, 12 silver and 10 bronze).
India recorded their best-ever Paralympic performance 19 medals in Tokyo in 2020.
After a terrific performance at the Tokyo Paralympics, the expectations are high from the Indian contingent this time around, India has sent a total of 84 athletes this time to Paris as compared to Tokyo (54 Athletes).

India recorded their first-ever medal in the Paralympics in 1972, when Murlikant Petkar won a gold medal in swimming, it was a massive thing for Indian sports. Petkar won the medal in Men's 50m freestyle.
India had a great 1984 Paralympics, Joginder Singh Bedi managed to win 3 medals for India, he participated in 3 events Shot Put, Javelin Throw & Discus Throw. Bhimrao Bhaskar also won a medal, ensuring India had four medals.
Joginder Bedi won a silver medal in the Men's Shot put and a bronze medal each in the Men's Javelin throw & Discus Throw. Bhimrao Kesarekar won a silver medal in Men's Javelin.

After 20 years the next Paralympics was held in Athens, and India won two medals Athens, Devendra Jhajharia who is hailed as a para legend bagged the second gold medal for India, becoming the second gold medalist, he won a gold medal in the Javelin throw. Rajinder Singh Rahelu won the other medal for India in the Athens Paralympics, he won a bronze in powerlifting.

India could only muster a solitary medal at the London Paralympics via Girish Nagarajegowda who won a silver medal in Men's high jump.
