Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has announced his retirement from ODI cricket to focus on T20s. In a career spanning from 2012 to 2025, Maxwell played in 149 ODIs, scoring 3990 runs and picking 77 wickets. He played a key role in helping Australia win the 2015 & 2023 ODI Cricket World Cups.
An explosive batter, Maxwell scored his runs at an average of 33.81 and a strike rate of 126.70. He is fondly remembered for his unbeaten double hundred (201*) in the 2023 ODI World Cup against Afghanistan. It is regarded as one of the greatest ODI innings ever played in the history of the game. Maxwell scored 3 centuries & 23 half-centuries in the 149 ODI games that he played. Maxwell was handy as a spinner, picking four wicket hauls four times, he was also a gun fielder, picking up 91 catches.'

Cricket Australia announced that Maxwell took the decision with an eye on preparation for the 2026 T20 World Cup, set to be held in India and Sri Lanka. The board also stated Maxwell's intention to focus on the Big Bash League and other international commitments.
Reflecting on his career and decision to retire, Maxwell said,
"I think now that I was picked too early & young to play for Australia, I was just proud to play for Australia in a couple of matches".
"Since then I've lived every moment of it getting dropped then being recalled, making runs picking up wickets, & obviously winning a few world cups feels nice."
Maxwell last played an ODI game against India in the Champions Trophy earlier this year. A leg injury has ruled Maxwell out of the ongoing IPL.
"I felt like I was letting down the team, & it was becoming a little difficult for my body to react quickly, I had a chat with George Bailey (Chair of Selectors) & discussed their plans going forward," he told the Final Word Podcast.
"We discussed the 2027 ODI World Cup, where I stated that I don't think I'll be able to make it. I feel it's time that fresh faces get a chance to play in my role & nail down that position before the 2027 World Cup comes."
"I always said that if I'm playing well, I won't leave. But, now with things not falling into place, I couldn't have even carried on for one or two series just for selfish reasons".
"The think tank has a clear strategy, which is so correct for the 2027 ODI World Cup, I feel it's better to let the younger lot take over."
Congratulating Maxwell on his career, his former captain and current chair of selectors, George Bailey, said,
"Glenn will be regarded as one of the best all-rounders in the 50-over his skill & dedication on and off the field was a masterclass to watch. Glenn's presence was vital for us to win the ODI World Cups in 2015 & 2023".
"Fortunately, he is looking forward to the 2026 T20 World Cup; his form will be important for us to try to win that title next year."
