After a lot of speculation, Gautam Gambhir has been officially announced as the head coach of the Indian Men's Cricket Team. BCCI Secretary Jay Shah announced today. Gambhir's first assignment will be the tour of Sri Lanka where the team will play 3 ODI's and 3 T20I's.
Gambhir replaces Rahul Dravid to begin a new era for the Indian Team. Under Dravid, India reached 3 finals in a year in the ICC events. Namely the World Test Championship Final (WTC) in 2023 and the ODI World Cup final in 2023. They conceded both titles to Australia before finally managing to win the T20 World Cup 2024 in the West Indies and USA.
"Gambhir in his new role will have the responsibility to better the performances of the Indian Team and as well as build a team culture that is healthy and disciplined and a team that aims for excellence. Along with this, his job will also be to nurture young and upcoming players". BCCI Stated in a media release
Though Gambhir hasn't coached an international side yet he has great experience as a player and a captain as he has led multiple teams and has also been part of many of many dressing rooms in the coaching capacity especially in the IPL. Gambhir was recently appointed as the mentor of the Kolkata Knight Riders after he resigned from the same post of Lucknow Supergiants. Gambhir in his very season as mentor helped KKR to get their third title in the IPL.
Gambhir in his 12-year-long career represented India in 58 tests, 147 ODI's, and 37 T20Is.
