The newly appointed head coach Gautam Gambhir has begun his India duties off the field as he discussed the squad for the upcoming Sri Lankan tour which is set to begin on July 27th. The meeting lasted for more than an hour.
The meeting was facilitated by the BCCI with all the big bosses present. BCCI secretary Jay Shah along with Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar. The meeting was held in an online mode with Gambhir joining from his base in New Delhi.
It was the first official meeting of Gambhir after becoming the head coach of Team India, In the meeting the point of discussion was about the future of the Indian team and the squad discussion for the Sri Lanka Series.
Head Coach Gautam Gambhir wanted that all the players should be available to play all three formats.
Rohit Sharma who recently won the T20 World Cup and announced his decision to retire, had asked for rest along with Virat Kohli.
However, there might be a change in the plan with Gambhir taking over, as there are very few ODI games for India before the Champions Trophy in Feb next year, Rohit might decide to play the series.
The Indian ODI and Test skipper is currently on vacation in the US with family.
Other senior members of the contingent Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah are unlikely to feature in the tour.
If Rohit Sharma decides against playing in the Sri Lankan tour then KL Rahul is likely to step in. Shreyas Iyer also is in the discussion for a relook in the ODI team after his stellar performance in the ODI World Cup last year.
There are also talks going on for a potential leadership switch in the T20I setup with Suryakumar Yadav now being ahead in the race to lead the Indian team on the road to the 2026 T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka.
Hardik Pandya previously when Rohit Sharma was not playing T20Is was handed over the reins, Pandya led the side for a year. He was also the Vice-captain in the recently concluded T20 World Cup in the USA and West Indies.
But now with Gambhir coming in Surya is currently leading the race to be the potential T20I captain. The reason for Hardik Pandya's removal is due to his fitness issues.
