As tensions between India and Pakistan continue to rise, the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 has been suspended indefinitely.
IPL 2025 was suspended due to the India-Pakistan war.
The Indian government launched "Operation Sindoor" on May 7th as a military reaction to a terrorist assault in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, on April 22nd, which is said to be the cause of the recent surge in tensions. There have been reports of drone and missile assaults in several Indian cities close to the border, suggesting that this operation has sparked retaliatory operations. Consequently, in response to air raid sirens and explosion reports, blackouts were imposed in several areas in Punjab and Chandigarh.
Following air raid alerts in nearby Indian cities of Jammu and Pathankot, the 58th league match of the IPL 2025 between the Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals was canceled after 10.1 overs of play in the first half on Thursday, May 8, at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) Stadium in Dharamsala. This puts the entire league at risk of being canceled.
The Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings Players have departed Dharamsala. Early this morning, they left the Hotel.
The scheduled match between the Royal Challengers Bengaluru and the Lucknow Super Giants has been postponed, although the IPL caravan has already arrived in Lucknow. Four knockout games, including the final in Kolkata, and twelve league games remained to be played at the time of the suspension.
When verifying the situation to PTI, a top BCCI official said, "It does not look nice that cricket goes on while the country is at war." Due to the ban, the rest of the season, which was supposed to end in Kolkata on May 25, is now completely unknown.
